Any Way You Look

Splore Festival - The Last Splore
February 2026
Tapapakanga Regional Park, Auckland, New Zealand
Four tall columns stand in an open group, each one a triangle in cross-section, each face wrapped in a distinct hand-designed graphic - bold circles, branching lines, fluid organic forms in hot pink, gold and coral. Walk around a column and the image changes entirely. A new face, a new graphic, a different world.
“The same object, three completely different expressions — and then the light changes, and even those disappear.”
The real illusion happens at night. Each column is lit from within by a coloured LED spotlight, and as the internal light shifts, so does what you see. Certain colours in the vinyl vanish, absorbed by the light wavelength shining through. Designs that were vivid by day become ghosts. Others intensify, glowing as though painted in fire. The column you thought you understood becomes something else entirely.
By day the vinyl dances with sunlight and shadow. By night, the columns become lanterns, an abstract campfire around which people naturally gather: to talk, to dance through, to simply watch.
